Is my piano due to be tuned?
Several clues indicate that your piano needs to be re-tuned. When you play a note, you hear more than one or you hear some kind of pulsation or vibration within the note itself. This is caused by the presence of several strings per note. Indeed, each key of your piano activates a hammer, which will strike the strings. Depending on the section of the piano, there are up to three strings for a single key which will vibrate in order to have sufficient volume and be well balanced with the other notes. The presence of several strings also enriches the tone of your instrument, because the hammer will not strike these three strings in the same way. Thus, each string will contribute to the harmonic richness of the note.
In more extreme cases, it can happen that the piano is so out of tune that a note supposed to be higher than another is very close or even lower! It's a sign that your instrument is in dire need of love! Dont wait!
How do I know if my piano needs repair ?
The piano is a mechanically very complex and sensitive instrument. While playing it, several discomforts will appear, indicating that it needs special attention:
- One note sounds louder than another, or more difficult to repeat the same note at the same volume
- Keys are not equal in height
- You have to adapt your playing on certain keys because they sound too loud or not loud enough
Upright piano or grand piano?
There is a difference in the mechanics between an upright piano (or apartment piano) and a grand piano. The strings being horizontal or vertical, the hammer will not respond in the same way. On a grand piano, gravity will allow the hammer to return naturally, thanks to the horizontal position of the strings. This decreases response time and allows more precise responsiveness in attack time and note repetition.
